The strategic incorporation of a Lewis acid onto a urea scaffold gives rise to a new family of tunable hydrogen bond donor (HBD) catalysts benefitting from enhanced reactivity when compared to conventional urea and thiourea catalysts. The installation of palladium on the urea scaffold has afforded urea palladacycles as highly active HBD catalysts for the activation of both nitro compounds and alkylidene malonates. Details behind the development of internal Lewis acid assisted urea catalysts, including the rationale behind their design and their ability to catalyze unique reactivity patterns, will be discussed.
