Indirect contact with contaminated objects is a major transmission route of infectious diseases and the use of antimicrobial coating could break the chain of infection. A multilevel antimicrobial with �contact-killing,� �release-killing,� and �anti-adhesion� properties has been developed by encapsulating gaseous chlorine dioxide biocide in smart polymers that enable sustained dosing of biocides. Higher dose rate is triggered by touch and droplet contamination to achieve 4 log reduction in 1 minute. The antimicrobial coating is effective against nonenveloped and enveloped RNA viruses, including influenza viruses such as human H1N1 swine flu viruses (A/PR/8/34 H1N1, A/Guangzhou/GIRD07/09 H1N1) and A/Aichi/2/1968 H3N2 flu virus, and Enterovirus 71 that causes hand-foot-and mouth disease in human. Better than 4 log (i.e., =99.99%) reductions was obtained at a short contact time of 1 min on the first day test and better than 95% reduction can be maintained thirty days after the initial coating.
