This study compares the quantum efficiencies for photoproducing singlet oxygen (1O2) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter in the excited triplet state (3CDOM*) for filtered, whole water samples, and for solutions of Suwanee River Fulvic Acid and Pony Lake Fulvic Acid. Correlations are observed between the comparative quantum yields of 1O2 and 3CDOM* and features in the excitation-emission fluorescence spectra, which can be traced to differences in the source material (microbial vs. terrestrial) for the CDOM. These results are consistent with prior work showing that the quantum efficiency is lower for terrestrial CDOM than for microbial CDOM and suggest further insights regarding the factors that may affect the balance of different photoproduced reactive species observed for a particular sample.
