In sunlit surface waters, the chloroacetanilide herbicide acetochlor (2-chloro-N-(ethoxymethyl)-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)acetamide) may undergo photosensitized transformations. These transformations are induced by transient species (�OH, �CDOM*, CO3?�) generated by sunlight-irradiated chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and nitrate or carbonate species in the water column. This study investigates how the phototransformation kinetics of acetochlor depends on the concentrations of relevant natural water constituents. A multivariate kinetics model is used to predict the photochemical transformation of acetochlor and formation of intermediates as a function of water composition and column depth.
