The prevalence of arsenic contamination in groundwater is widespread, and consumption of arsenic contaminated water poses potential health risks.  Synthetic manganese oxides can immobilize arsenite via oxidation and sorption. Certain bacteria and fungi have the ability to produce biogenic manganese oxides. In general, biogenic manganese oxides have a greater surface area and higher cation exchange capacity than synthetic manganese oxides.  In this study, manganese oxides will be produced by Pseudomonas putida under controlled laboratory conditions and used to remove As(III) from water.  Results from this study, characteristics and properties of biogenic manganese oxides and As(III) removal rates, will be presented here.
