The concept of associating Lewis base (LB) and Lewis acid (LA) moieties has stimulated tremendous interest over the last few years. Most remarkable is the ability of so-called Frustrated Lewis Pairs to react with a wide variety of small molecules and eventually to work as metal-free catalysts. In addition, phosphine-boranes and related Frustrated Lewis pairs have been shown to possess versatile coordination properties. In particular, LA?M?LB bridging coordination of these ambiphilic ligands provides a straightforward and relatively general access to unusual metal?Lewis acid interactions.This presentation will summarize our results in this area. The ability of Lewis acids to coordinate as s-acceptor ligands (Z-type ligands) will be discussed.
