Portions of the natural wetland environment in the coastal marshes of Barataria Bay, Lousiana were negatively impacted by the Deepwater Horizon MC252 oil spill.  This presentation describes the similarities and differences in dissolved organic matter (DOM) from pristine and oil-impacted sampling sites, as revealed by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS).  Large quantities of DOM were isolated from 150-500 liter samples at five sampling locations using the coupled reverse osmosis/electrodialysis (RO/ED) method.  On average, more than 60% of the peaks having a signal-to-noise ratio of three or greater were assigned molecular formulae, and comparative analyses of peak masses and intensities were used to detect any effects of the oil spill on the composition of DOM.
