The objective of this study is to develop a new index to evaluate the operation of backwash in the rapid filter of water treatment plant (WTP). The water used and wastewater produced during the backwash operation is the major problem and cost caused in WTP. How to reduce the water used and wastewater produced has become a great important concern for WTP especially on the recall of carbon reduction issue. We develop a new index, TD calculated from the sharp of turbidity change in the filtered effluent after last backwash operation. Positive TD indicates the over degree of filtered effluent contrast to effluent turbidity limit set by WTP. On the contrast, a low TD or negative TD value shows a more satisfied effluent quality and better backwash operation. A field test in a Wheeler type filter of Tang Din WTP is conducted to confirm the feasibility of TD. Three different backwash initial velocities were set to observe the turbidity change of filtered effluent and TD values are highly correlated with velocity changes.
