Efficiency of cadmium vapor generation is relatively poor and also problematic due to severe interferences of transition metals. Here, we present a novel chemistry via cyanide complexes of Cr(III), Ti(III) and V(III) for generation of volatile species of Cd. Cyanide complexes were formed on-line by reacting aqueous solutions of each element with potassium cyanide and then interacted with acidic sample solution. Cadmium vapor was generated by reacting solutions with NaBH4. Effects of various parameters, including sample acidity, concentrations of Cr(III), Ti(III), V(III) and KCN, and lengths of reaction lines were optimized for best settings. Cd signals were enhanced by 15- to 40-fold for cyanides of Cr(III) to Ti(III) yielding detection limits of 5.0 to 6.2 ng/L by ICP-MS. Common transitions metals had no interference at 1.0 �g/mL. Effects of hydride forming elements were moderate. Applications to determination of Cd by ICP-MS in seawater and tissue certified reference samples are demonstrated.
