The effect of acetic acid, one major inhibitor in lignocellulosic hydrolysate, on the growth and lipid accumulation of oleaginous yeast Trichosporon fermentans  was investigated under controlled pH conditions. Acetic acid concentrations of 0, 1.5 and 3 g/L, were examined under controlled pH of 4.5 and 6.5 in aerobic batch cultivation in a 5 L fermentor. The presence of acetic acid in lower pH resulted in a more significant decrease in maximum cell biomass concentration. At pH 6.5, acetic acid had little influence on the lipid content except a higher lipid content of 57% in comparison to the control of 51% obtained at the acetic acid concentration of 1.5 g/L. T. fermentans cannot grow in the medium containing 3 g/L acetic acid at pH 4.5 and the decrease of intracellular pH examined by laser scanning confocal microscope and fluorescence spectrometer with fluorescent dye BCECF-AM partly accounts for this negative effect.
