2,4,6-trichloro-s-triazine has been used as one of the important linkers of reactive dyes for textiles such as cellulosic fibers. In this study, N-halamine precursors which bonded to a triazine-based linker by the chloride displacement reaction, were synthesized and attached to cotton fabrics. The synthesized s-triazine-based N-halamine precursors react with cellulose to produce biocidal cellulosic fibers upon exposure to diluted household bleach. The new process to treat cotton fabrics with the N-halamine precursors and the optimum conditions for finishing were studied. Compared to the traditional pad-dry-cure technique to produce antimicrobial textiles, the novel process in this study has advantages of being saving energy and maintaining tensile strength of fabrics. Antimicrobial efficacies of the chlorinated cotton swatches against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Escherichia coli O157:H7 (ATCC 43895) were demonstrated.
