Extended linear chain (ELC) materials composed of square planar platinum(II) complexes, such as cis-bis(isopropylisocyanide)dicyanoplatinum(II), that are held together in part by weak metallophillic interactions have been shown to exhibit vapochromic properties in the presence of benzene vapor.  In general, ELC materials can be effective chemical sensors for a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene.  To be an effective chemical sensor, the material must bind the VOC and induce a reversible color change. We have manipulated the structure of bis(alkylisocyanide)dicyanoplatinum-based ELC materials by using different isocyanide ligands in an attempt to synthesize a material that can reversibly incorporate benzene vapor. We have synthesized Pt(CN)2(n-C4H9)2 through a double salt isomerization procedure and Pt(CN)2(tert-C4H9)2 through a clipping reaction. Data will be presented that characterizes the structural and vapochromic properties of the ELC materials that form from the crystallization of these two square planar platinum(II) complexes.
