We report the use of an Al(III) amino triphenolate complex that shows high synthetic potential in the formation of cyclic organic carbonates using highly functional epoxides/oxetanes and CO2 as reagents. High turn-over frequencies (TOFs) can be attained up to 36.000 h-1 and the substrate scope includes terminal and internal epoxides, oxetanes and sterically encumbered epoxides. Furthermore, the presence of many functional groups is tolerated including morpholine, alkyne, ester and sulfonic ester fragments. The current catalytic method is unique as it combines an accessible and cheap catalyst based on an abundant metal, it shows high activity for most of the substrates and can convert highly challenging substrates. It can thus be marked a step forward in organic carbonate formation.
