Tris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) ligands have enjoyed much success in inorganic and coordination chemistry due to their ease of synthesis and the ability to be  sterically and electronically modified. We have prepared several thallium salts of novel redox active TpFc,R ligands (where Fc = ferrocenyl and R = H, Me, iPr, CF3, Fc) through a low-temperature synthetic pathway. In particular, the TpFc,MeTl salt is isolated as the N-confused hydrotris(3-ferrocenyl-5-methyl)2(3-methyl-5-ferrocenylpyrazolyl)borate. We have found that this ligand can be thermally isomerized into the symmetric hydrotris(3-ferrocenyl-5methylpyrazolyl)borate ligand. The synthesis of these complexes, as well as the corresponding cobalt complexes and their reactivity towards O2 and other small molecules will be discussed.
