Previous work at Wheeling Jesuit University has indicated the presence of stable intermediates produced during the thermal decomposition of cis-dicarbonylbis(diorganodithiocarbamato)iron(II) complexes. In particular, evidence suggests the possible formation of the monocarbonylbis(diorganodithiocarbamato)iron(II) complexes. The successful synthesis of this class of compounds has not been previously reported in the literature. Identification of the decomposition products through thermogravimetric analysis alone is indirect and requires further confirmation. Coupling of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to thermogravimetric analysis allows for identification of the gases produced during decomposition which provides more direct evidence of the nature of the decomposition products. In addition, attenuated total reflectance FTIR permits rapid analysis of the milligram quantities of the products formed during thermogravimetric analysis.
