Transition metal dichalcogenides are an important class of layered materials that have been used in hydrogen storage, capacitors, lubricants, catalysis, batteries, and photovoltaic devices. Tungsten selenide is an indirect band gap semiconductor composed of earth abundant elements. In addition, WSe2 is an appealing photovoltaic material because of its near ideal band gap (Eg = 1.2 eV), photostability, and its incorporation into photoelectrochemical devices has given conversion efficiencies up to 17%. Traditional methods to prepare WSe2 include sputtering, chemical vapor deposition, solid state reaction, and electrodeposition; however, there have been very few reports of solution phase syntheses of WSe2 to produce colloidal nanosheets. We have developed a colloidal synthesis of WSe2 nanosheets using a soluble di-tert-butyl diselenide selenium precursor. The optical, structural, and electrical properties of the nanosheets will be discussed.
