Titanium on silicate supports (e.g. TS-1, Ti-MCM48) represents a well-known family of selective oxidation catalysts. Maintaining homogeneous site nuclearity, dispersity and connectivity to the surface are thought to be critical properties in the definition of the active sites in many of these catalysts. We have developed a general methodology for incorporating atomic and polynuclear titanium sites into a silicate matrix where the connectivity of the metal(s) to the surrounding matrix can be targeted and achieved with high fidelity. The synthesis, characterization and reactivity of silicate matrices containing only 2-connected titanium (2C-Ti) or 3C- or 4C-Ti sites will be described as well as catalysts containing only Ti4 sites. The 2C-Ti and Ti4 catalysts are both highly active and stable to aqueous peroxide in the selective oxidation of alkyl phenols to quinones.
