The abundance and affordability of iron make it an attractive target for homogenous catalysis.  However, iron, like other first row transition metals, often reacts via one-electron (radical) processes, whereas the precious metal catalysts, common in organic synthesis, generally react via two-electron processes.  We are designing ligands to promote two-electron reaction pathways at iron with the goal of developing selective oxidation catalysts for organic synthesis.  The results of these studies will be the subject of this poster.
