Metal-ligand multiply bonded species are promising platforms for small-molecule activation, particularly in cases where incomplete p-bonding leads to adjacent Lewis-basic and -acidic sites. These otherwise reactive complexes may be stabilized by chelating ligands, including pincer-type frameworks with a planar coordination geometry about the metal center. We have developed a straightforward route to bis(phosphino)dihydrosilane ligands from a stabilized H2SiCl2 source and have examined their metallation at Ni(II) and Co(II) centers and subsequent reactivity with the goal of preparing late-metal silylene complexes exhibiting behavior similar to main-group frustrated Lewis pairs.
