1,2:5,6-Di-O-isopropylidene-a-D-glucofuranose, diacetone glucose (DAG), is commercially available and can be easily prepared from glucose in high yield. Tosylation of the remaining alcohol followed by elimination yields an olefin monomer in 50% yield. Here we report initial efforts to polymerize the DAG derived olefin using a variety of methods, including radical and cationic mechanisms.
