Proteins fold and function in highly crowded environments full of macromolecules and viscous small molecule solvents.  The interplay of crowding, solvation and chemical interactions affects function and folding.  I will present examples of different proteins whose crowded folding was investigated experimentally in vitro and in live cells.  In some cases crowding dominates over solvation effects and proteins are stabilized, in other cases, such as the Lyme disease protein VlsE, proteins are destabilized significantly inside the cell.
