 N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been widely utilized as nucleophilic organocatalysts and as effective ligands in numerous transition metal catalyzed transformations. The most common method for the formation of NHCs is in situ deprotonation of the corresponding azolium salts. We have developed a novel proline-based imidazolium salt that allows for the incorporation of NHC ligands into peptides and can be used in the synthesis of bivalent ligands. The synthesis of this NHC precursor and its use in catalysis will be discussed.
