There is a major trend on a global level to substitute oil based materials by materials from renewable resources. The most common biogenic polymer is cellulose. 190 million tons of cellulose pulp are produced from wood annually. Up to now only a very small part of that (about 3.5 million tons) is used in the chemical fiber industry. The presentation will summarize the current status of technical fibers based on cellulose. The main focus will be on the different properties of technical Rayon fibers compared to synthetic materials (mainly Polyester) and on new developments in cellulosic fibers.
