Synthesis of glycerol carbonate from transesterification of dimethyl carbonate with glycerol was conducted in the presence of various metal oxides, such as magnesium-lanthanum mixed oxide and CaO. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray Diffraction, IR spectroscopy, TOF-SIMS, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area and TPD of CO2 analysis. In this study, we found CaO calcined at 900�C was completely dissolved in the specific reaction mixture of glycerol and DMC, which indicate the CaO is act as homogeneous catalyst. We also successfully isolated and characterized the dissolved Ca species. On the other hand, Mg-La oxides act as heterogeneous catalyst and its catalytic activity is depend on the molar ratio of Mg/La, the precipitating agent, and the calcination temperature. The effect of reaction conditions such as reaction time, DMC/glycerol molar ratio, reaction temperature, and catalyst amount were also discussed for each catalyst.
