The new sucralose-derived solid acid catalyst, containing Cl and SO3H groups, was successfully prepared through sulfonation of incompletely carbonized sucralose and showed to be effective in hydrolysis of �-1, 4 glucans. The enhanced adsorption capacity for glucan by Cl group as a cellulose-binding site could solve the existed bottleneck, i.e. low accessibility of typical solid catalyst to the reaction position, for hydrolysis of cellulose over heterogeneous catalysts, and therefore improved the catalytic activity. Cellobiose was completely hydrolyzed into glucose in 12 hours at 383K, and regenerated cellulose was hydrolyzed into glucose with a yield of 51%. The apparent activation energy for hydrolysis of cellobiose with the sucralose-derived catalyst was 94 kJ/mol, which was much lower than that with sulfuric acid (133 kJ/mol). Furthermore, the sucralose-derived catalyst showed no leaching of SO3H and Cl groups during its successive re-use of 5 batches (6 hours per batch), indicating excellent operational stability.
