1 wt% Pt/TiO2 catalysts were prepared with the H2 gas reduction and the wet impregnation methods, and characterized with BET, XRD, HR-TEM, CO-chemisorption and ICP-MS. The toluene oxidation was carried out in a fixed-bed tubular reactor with concentration of 600ppm and space velocity of 20,000 h-1. The Pt/TiO2 catalyst with the H2 gas reduction showed far better toluene oxidation activity regardless of its smaller Pt metallic and BET surface area. The oxidation reaction started at 130 ? and almost completed at 180 ?, that was approximately 80 ? lower compared with the Pt/TiO2 prepared with wet impregnation method. Based on HR-TEM results, the Pt/TiO2 catalyst with H2 reduction method showed mainly Pt(111) plane while the Pt/TiO2 catalyst prepared with wet impregnation method showed both Pt(111) and Pt(100) plane. The correlation between the catalytic activity and crystal plane will be discussed with the results obtained from TPR and XPS analyses.
