The introduction of a ring into the polyene moiety of an indocyanine dye led to a diminished fluorescent yield.   Shortening the polyene system by one carbon, however, led to a large increase in fluroescent yield.   The improved dye was coupled to an imidazole targeting unit to allow imaging of cancerous tumors in the near infrared.
