Steroidal furan antibiotics have captured the interest of the pharmaceutical industry and synthetic organic chemistry since their discovery. One interesting member of this family is viridin, which was isolated over 60 years ago. To date, Sorenson and co-workers have reported the only total synthesis of viridin. Herein, we report our progress towards an enantioselective synthesis of viridin, which makes use of our proline sulfonamide catalyzed Yamada-Otani annulation to construct the central cyclohexane core.
