Recently, organic semiconductors have emerged as promising alternatives to inorganic semiconductors. Organic semiconductors are potentially less expensive than inorganic semiconductors, and the synthetic versatility of organic materials allows for the tuning of their structures and properties. This relationship between structure and property in organic semiconductors, however, has not yet been thoroughly studied. Derivatives of a number of organic semiconductors, including perylene diimides and donor/acceptor co-crystals, have been prepared and studied to compare material characteristics with semiconductor performance. Of particular interest is the relationship between crystal structure and field-effect mobility. Progress towards the synthesis and characterization of these organic semiconducting materials, as well as the incorporation of these materials into single-crystal field-effect transistors, will be reported.
