Diels-Alder reactions of prochiral 1,5-disubstituted anthracenes have received surprisingly little attention, not to mention their further development into chiral auxiliaries and ligands for possible use in chiral catalysis.  This presentation reports on the study of the Diels-Alder chemistry of principally two 1,5-disubstituted anthracenes, 1,5-diphenylanthracene and 1,5-bis(phenylmethoxy)anthracene, with dienophiles such as dimenthyl fumarate, fumaronitrile, and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, and their subsequent development into useful chiral auxiliaries and ligands.
