Alkylation involving enolates has proven over the years to be a reliable method for forming carbon-carbon bonds. Despite its importance, the characterization of enolate aggregates in the ground state has not been thoroughly explored, though they are known to form highly ordered and symmetrical aggregates in solution. Using the scalar coupling in NMR is a classical approach to determining the solution structure, but this method fails when the metal is bonded to quadripolar oxygen. The structurally diverse nature of both the enolate and metal center requires a robust and flexible method for characterization. The Method of Continuous Variation with NMR spectroscopy has been used to gain structural insight into aggregate formation and stability.
