A series of 1,3-dithiolane-2-thiones (2 ) has been prepared by a new simple procedure: a treatment of epoxides (1 ) with commercially available potassium ethyl xanthogenate. The procedure is simple, inexpensive, fast. It does not require catalysts and leads to the formation of exclusively products (2 ) in good to moderate yields. Trithiocarbonates (2 ) can be used as building blocks in synthesis of versatile ligands and polymers, they possess radioprotective and insecticidal activities. The mechanism and stereochemistry of the reaction have been studied.
