The investigation of organocatalyzed [5+2] cycloadditions between oxidopyrylium intermediates and alkenes has led to several novel discoveries.  It has been determined that there are significant reactivity differences between syn- and anti-acetoxypyranones.  Furthermore, evidence suggests that acetoxypyranone-alkene cycloadducts have the potential to undergo an intramolecular conjugate addition.  Finally, an imidazolidinone catalyzed [5+2] cycloaddition of a syn-acetoxypyranone-enal will be discussed.
