Traditional methods of flash chromatography can be tedious, wasteful and time consuming. Most analytes separated using flash chromatography are colorless, making them hard to identify as they elute off of the column. Because of this, large amounts of time and solvent are wasted trying to determine when all of the analytes have eluted off of the flash column. To alleviate this problem, fluorescein and rhodamine dye derivatives were tethered to a stationary phase and used as fluorescent indicators in silica gel. Herein, is a discussion of the formation and use of these immobilized dyes. Both immobilized rhodamine and fluorescein were employed with flash chromatography and monitored under long wave UV light. This system resulted in the identification of analytes as they progressed and eluted from the column.
