Progress toward the synthesis of a family of potential HIV-1 protease-inhibiting cis-epoxides (1 ) is presented.  cis-Epoxides are generated from the corresponding Z-alkenes (2 ) via Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation (SAE).  Alkenes (2 ) are generated via ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of silicon-tethered intermediates 3 .  The silicon-tethered molecules are generated in one step from the Montmorillonite-K10 clay-catalyzed reaction of aldehydes with diallyldimethyl silane.
