Dihydropyrans are subunits of many biologically active compounds.  This project worked to optimize the one-pot tandem Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling Michael reaction.  Previous works have shown that a strong base in the Suzuki reaction is effective, but results in a decrease in yield of the overall product.  This work probed the effect of either an aldehyde or a ketone as the electrophile on the reaction.  Efficiency of the one-pot process was optimized due to the increase in electrophile strength of the aldehyde and ketone versus the ester.
