An intramolecular palladium(II)-catalyzed oxidative carbon-carbon bond formation reaction in pivalic acid in air has been optimized for the preparation of dibenzofurans from substituted diaryl ethers. The reaction was initially optimized using 2-(3,5-dimethoxyphenoxy)-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzonitrile, producing the corresponding dibenzofuran in good yield. The scope and limitations of this optimized process will be presented.
