Indole containing compounds have historically represented important structures in medicinal chemistry.  We have recently prepared a vinamidinium salt that contains an indole group attached at the 2-position of a vinamidinium salt scaffold and a 3-chloroenal that contains an indole group attached at the 3-position of the chloroenal scaffold.  Such substances represent key building blocks for the regioselective preparation of pyrazoles, pyrimidines, pyrroles, pyridines and novel alkynes.  Indole natural products such as Lycogalic acid, Lycogarubin C, Lycogarubin B and Lynamycin E form an interesting family of natural products that contain both the indole skeleton and the pyrrole motif.
