Ashlee Chavez, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Bimal K. Banik* Research on �-lactams has received significant attention because these derivatives have saved millions of lives around the world. These are the most extensively used compounds for treatment against bacterial infections and have shown successful demonstrations for anticancer properties. We have been working on synthesis and biological evaluation of novel anticancer �-lactams. In continuation of our study, we present here synthesis of a few bis �-lactams following ketene-imine [2+2] cycloaddition (Staudinger) reaction. It has shown that in order for the compounds to be cytotoxic towards the cancer cells, they must have at least three fused aromatic rings in an angular fashion on nitrogen atom. The newly synthesized �-lactams will target different human cancer cell lines which will require further research as well as the stereochemical distribution of the products.
