Poly(dimethylsiloxane)s show a unique combination of desirable properties such as high thermal stability, chemical and physiological inertness, which gives rise to a broad range of applications. If they are used as solid materials, it is necessary to chemically (and most often irreversibly) cross-link the polymer chains. Supramolecular interactions based on hydrogen bonds between the polymer chains act as physical cross-links in these materials. In the presented system the poly(dimethylsiloxane) chains are functionalized with the pyrimidine bases thymine and cytosine via a click reaction which results in materials that are cross-linked by reversible thymine-thymine and cytosine-cytosine interactions, respectively. Further cross-linking is achieved by blending the thymine-functionalized materials with melamine derivatives. The strong melamine-thymine interaction has a remarkable impact on the material thermal and mechanical properties.
