A set of new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysts derived from 1,2,3-triazolium salts have been developed that facilitate the oxidative esterification of aryl and cinnamaldehydes using an organic chemical oxidant. Using real-time reaction monitoring, mechanistic details have been elucidated and the resting state of the catalyst has been identified. Reaction rate and overall conversion are dependent upon both ring size and N-substituent.  The acidities of the triazolium precatalysts have an inverse correlation with their reactivities.
