Nitrosamines, several of which are included on the most recent U.S. EPA Contaminant Candidate List, are a toxic class of disinfection byproducts commonly associated with chloramination, but recent studies show direct formation during ozonation of natural and reclaimed waters. Nitrosamine formation may be a significant barrier to ozonation in water reuse applications, particularly for indirect potable reuse. Only a few studies have identified precursors for NDMA formation due to ozone (O3). In this work, fourteen compounds were chosen based on literature review and chemical structure. Precursor compounds were spiked into ultrapure water and reclaimed water samples and spiked with excess O3. Additional experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of the bromide ion, O3 dose, and addition of hydrogen peroxide, as well as compare NDMA formation in various water matrices during chloramination and ozonation. The results show several new NDMA precursor compounds that have not been previously reported in the literature.
