Contaminants amenable to AOP treatment are those that are fast reacting with hydroxyl radicals. OH radical induced transformation products for these contaminants are mostly unknown, as are their toxicity. If toxic products are formed, then a downstream engineered process, such as biofiltration, should be explored for additional removal. The goal of this project, funded by the Water Research Foundation (WaterRF 4241 Advanced Oxidation and Transformation of Organic Contaminants), is to assess the formation of toxic products resulting from AOP treatment, and the possible need for further treatment. AOP transformation products were evaluated using a suite of toxicity screening assays (genotoxicity, estrogenicity, neurotoxicity) relevant to human health concerns. Twenty seven different compounds, all on the USEPA CCL3 list, are under investigation. The degradation and toxicity of the CCL3 organophosphorous insecticides: acephate, dicrotophos, fenamiphos, and methamidophos were studied. Ozone, direct photolysis, and hydroxyl radical rate constants for all insecticides were determined. Following treatment by both UV and ozone based advanced oxidation, methamidophos transformation products exhibited a higher genotoxicity level than the parent compound before degradation.
