Luminescent cyclometalated platinum complexes, e.g., (2-phenylpyridyl)Pt(acac), have been proposed for use in various applications such as sensors, solar cells and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to the efficient emission from the triplet excited state.  The intense phosphorescence from these compounds is due to emission from a mixed ligand-centered/metal-to-ligand charge transfer state.  The high luminescent efficiency from these complexes (approaching 100% for some derivatives) comes about from the high radiative rates (kr) of these compounds, with some values being greater than 1 x 105 s-1.  However, several derivatives display values of kr that are an order of magnitude lower than complexes with the fastest rate.  Some of the differences come about from an increased separation in energy between the interacting singlet and triplet levels.  Another source for the wide variation in kr can be traced back to the effect the electron distribution in the frontier orbitals of the cyclometalating ligand have on spin-orbit coupling.  The ability of the electronic structure calculations to predict relative values for the radiative rate of the complexes on the basis of this latter process will be discussed.
