Understanding how energy migrates within a crystal at small size regimes is a crucial stepping stone in creating devices that implement nanoscale materials, particularly when two inorganic materials need to be interfaced. Resonant energy migration between the 2E states of Cr3+ ions in [Ru(bpy)3][NaCr(ox)3]  has been observed using fluorescence line narrowing (FLN) spectroscopy on bulk materials.  Through the creation of nanocrystals of several sizes via the reverse micelle technique it was possible to bring the distance between internal Cr3+ ions and those on the surface within the order of magnitude of the critical radius for energy transfer of this material.  It then became possible to observe energy migration to the surface of these nanocrystals using FLN.  The increase in the nephelauxetic effect and thus the lowering of the energy of the 2E state associated with Cr3+ ions approaching the surface leads to energy selectively migrating to the surface of the nanocrystals before luminescing.
