Gold(I) cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTCs) are investigated with various exobidentate bridging ligands, carbenes, imidazoles and pyrazoles. Crystal structure show that the complexes exist as single molecules, dimers of trimers, and intricate supramolecular aggregates. The stacking patterns of the CTCs are dictated by their intermolecular aurophilic interactions, which can be adjusted by their ligand substituents. Also discussed are the p-acid/p-base interactions of the CTCs with heavy metal salts that allow the arrangement of full sandwich clusters with six metal-metal interactions. The complexes and adducts exhibit bright luminescence due to diverse intermolecular and intramolecular metallophillic interactions. Their luminescence spans the visible region ranging from red to blue to white, and is shown to be dependent on excitation, and temperature. The solid state luminescence is compared and contrasted with crystal structures. Also discussed are how these materials can be utilized in electronic devices, including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and thin film transistors (OTFTs).
