The production of CO, a versatile chemical precursor and fuel from CO2 is an attractive route to the utilization of CO2 as a C1 source. Redox-active ligands have been shown to assist in the activation and conversion of small molecules. The research presented focuses on the redox-active capability of pyridinediimine (PDI) ligands and their promotion of the CO2-to-CO conversion on iron(II). This conversion is a passive-type ligand-based reduction, where the electrons for the CO2 conversion are supplied by a reduced PDI ligand and the ferrous state of the iron is conserved. The CO2-to-CO conversion is followed by the release of CO when HCl is added as an oxidant, completing the catalytic cycle. Furthermore, the CO2 conversion is executed under ambient CO2 pressure and temperature. The Ferrous state of the iron is confirmed throughout the cycle by different spectroscopic methods.
