Iridium and copper complexes of di- and tri- dentate nitrogen bearing ligands have been prepared and utilized to probe O2 activation and CO2 reduction. Reactivity at the metal center is modulated through manipulation of the hydrogen ion concentration in solution and ligand based acid dissociation constants are reported. Variation of the bidentate and tridentate nitrogen donor ligands influences electron donor properties. A comparison of the reactivity at the metal center as a function of the first and second coordination spheres is reported.
