Zeolites are one class of porous materials that are currently being explored for separation  environmentally harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) from several major CO2 sources: combustion of fossil fuels (post-combustion separation of CO2 from N2) and natural gas extraction (pre-combustion separation of CO2 from CH4). Zeolites typically exhibit fairly high internal surface areas allowing them to physically adsorb significant amounts of gas. They can also be readily exchanged with varying cations with the host-pore network which can lead to a number of effects such as exclusion due to the size/shape of the pores/cations, adsorbent/cation surface interactions, and varying diffusion rates between different components in a gas mixture. While adsorption capacity is important, high selectivity and facile regeneration are pertinent properties as well. We can determine site-specific adsorption properties utilizing powder X-ray and neutron diffraction combined with in-situ gas adsorption. We report on the pertinent results from several of our recent investigations of low-pressure CO2/N2/CH4 sorption in cation-exchange zeolites including Zeolite-A (5A) and SSZ-13 (CHA).
