We will report the preparation, (photo)physical characterization, and computed excited state energies for a family of first-row metal complexes based on tripodal hexadentate and/or bidentate iminopyridine Schiff base ligands. Ligand non-innocence is probed via magnetic, electrochemical and structural studies; and is clearly evident in �Cr(II)� complexes. Small structural changes in the ligands (e.g. tethering of bidentate species) effect large changes in excited state behaviors, including a turning-off of phosphorescence for tripodal Cr(III) complexes. Extensive computational analyses (TD-DFT and NTO) provide insight into the microscopic origins of the varied behaviors, and reveal significant involvement of the ligands in the electronic transitions.
